Leavenworth, Kansas, Public Works and Unified School District 453
2021
The Unified School District 453 and the City of Leavenworth partnered with WRS to complete a preliminary engineering feasibility study of Fivemile Creek from New Lawrence Road to 10th Avenue. This reach of creek is experiencing bank erosion and bank failures that are encroaching on the adjacent park trail, football field, and new $3.19 million sports complex.
The study was funded by city sanitary sewer improvement funds, as the erosion had exposed a sanitary sewer encasement crossing the stream within the project area. WRS conducted a graded fluvial geomorphology assessment by individual stream reach, created hydraulic model of the project-area stream, developed individual design solution alternatives for each of nine reaches with engineers’ opinions of probable cost, prioritized each alternative solution and reach, and evaluated permit requirements.
